Title: first time in china. is beijing or shanghai better for a beginner?

i am planning my first trip to china and i have 5 days. not much time i know. trying to decide between beijing and shanghai.

beijing seems more traditional. great wall and forbidden city look amazing. but people say the air pollution is bad and it is very crowded.

shanghai looks more modern and easier to get around. also closer to other places like hangzhou or suzhou for day trips. but maybe it doesnt feel like "real china" some people say.

i like history and food. not super into shopping or nightlife.

which city would you recommend for a first timer with only 5 days?

also is pollution still a big problem in beijing?
