i went to china in january. it was cold. here's what i learned about packing.

layers are key. i wore thermal underwear, a fleece, and a jacket. most days i needed all three.

in beijing, temperatures were below freezing. wind made it worse. bring a hat and gloves.

in shanghai, it was warmer but still cold. around 0-5 degrees.

further south like guilin was milder. 5-10 degrees. still needed a jacket.

heated indoors everywhere. restaurants and hotels were warm. you'll be taking off your jacket inside.

i didn't need heavy snow boots. regular winter shoes were fine.

pack an umbrella. it rained a few days in shanghai.
