eating vegan in china is easier than you think

i was worried about finding vegan food in china. turns out it was not that hard. buddhist monasteries have been doing vegan for centuries.

first thing. learn this phrase. wo chi su. means i eat vegetarian. not perfect but helps. also learn "mei you rou" which means no meat.

big cities have vegan restaurants. happy cow app helped me find them. in beijing there is a place called vegan hut near the lama temple. really good fake meat dishes.

but the best vegan food is not in vegan restaurants. look for buddhist temples. many have vegetarian canteens. lingyin temple in hangzhou has one. cheap and delicious.

also look for "su shi" places. they are vegetarian restaurants often run by monks. the food is amazing and cheap.

street food can be tricky. jianbing (the breakfast crepe) has egg. skip it. the scallion pancakes are usually vegan. so are the grilled skewers if you get tofu or mushrooms.

hot pot is easy. get a plain broth and load up on tofu and vegetables. just tell them "wo bu chi rou" i dont eat meat.

one warning. some dishes look vegan but have oyster sauce or chicken powder. ask "mei you jiang you?" means no oyster sauce.

overall i ate great food in china as a vegan. just needed to be a bit careful.
